Seven states (plus Washington, D.C.) in the Northeast US have committed to development of a regional policy to reduce carbon pollution from the transportation sector. This is critical, as transportation is responsible for 44% of CO2 emissions in this region. Do I know anyone who will be involved in this effort? We need to make sure that this isn’t just about tax benefits for EV buyers and putting more CNG or electric buses on the road. Enabling more active transportation will be key! This means safer streets, more shared-use paths, education and encouragement programs for walkers and bicyclists, and enforcement of laws that keep walkers and cyclists safe. It may be modeled after RGGI, which has been successful in the Northeastern US with its cap-auction-invest program for carbon emissions from electricity production.
